Q) What's a FAQ?

A: This is a FAQ.
   "FAQ" is an abbreviation for "Frequently Asked Questions" and is a
   document intended to answer some of the more common questions.

Q) There doesn't seem to be a way to do a batch upload. Why can't you
   select more than one file at a time to send?

A: You can! But the new TERMINATOR 2 has a different philosophy and a
   new way of working with multiple different task-windows opened at
   the same time.

   There are a number of ways to accomplish the task of a batch upload
   using a File Navigator window, including:-

   DRAG & DROP:
   a) Perhaps before you begin your remote session, open a File
   Navigator Window. (You could use the MouseMenu(TM) by clicking in
   the Terminal window's extreme lower right corner or invoking the
   menu system by clicking on the extreme top row. In each case you
   then select File Navigator [Alt][F])
   b) Tag the files you wish to batch upload or send by selecting each
   one with the Right mouse button or holding down the Right mouse
   button while moving through and tagging a group of files in the File
   Panel of the Navigator.
   c) Re-size the File Navigator window in which your batch of files
   for upload is tagged (drag the windows extreme lower right corner to
   position) and switch to the Terminal window (you will find the
   Window Manager on [Shift][Esc])
   d) When you are ready to upload, simply switch to the diminished
   File Navigator window and drag and drop the group of selected files
   onto the Terminal window by clicking on the file panel and holding
   down the Left mouse button while moving the mouse cursor (now
   transformed into a bar showing the number of selected files) onto
   the Terminal window below. Voila!

   [Ctrl][S]end:
   Repeat steps a) and b) above.
   Then, when you are ready to upload, simply switch to the File
   Navigator window and invoke [Ctrl][S]end            et Voila!

   In each case, you may want to make use of one of our File
   Navigators' most powerful features: the Temporary Drive.
   To Open a temporary drive select this particular option when you
   invoke [L]og Disk.
   Then copy the files you want to batch upload to this Temporary Drive
   (perhaps from several different disks and directories) ready for one
   of the procedures outlined above.

   We have now also included a new toggle: "FN for auto-uploads" so
   either
   1) Your pre-existing File Navigator window will open automatically
   or
   2) If no File Navigator window was already open, a new one with just
   the default upload directory sorted on extension will open
   automatically

Q) I can never get the Fax Manager to answer the phone and receive a
   fax by itself. Why?

A: Except when the Fax Manager is started from the command line with
   T2 /FAX, it will always start with Autoreceive toggled OFF. You
   need to deliberately toggle Autoreceive ON!

   If you wish to answer Fax, Fido Mailer and Data calls all on the
   same telephone line with a suitable adaptive answer modem then

   a) Set the port speed for your Fax device no faster than 19,200bps
      (from experience we know that this is the fastest port speed you
      can reliably use with many modems while they are in Fax mode...)

   b) Allow the Fax Manager (rather than Mini(G)Host or Cain Mailer)
      to answer all calls. (If the Fax Manager detects a non-Fax call
      it will act appropriately.)

   c) toggle Autoreceive ON!

Q) Whenever I do something with the Phonebook, it crashes.

A: You probably have ENORMOUS Phonebooks. Try and split them up into a
   series of smaller Phonebooks.
   Remember: the Phonebook is held in memory and if you have lots of
   subsidiary entries with comments, etc, the memory requirements can
   quickly get bigger than you imagine.
   Consider moving to OS/2 Warp where ALL of your memory can be used
   rather than just the DOS limit...

Q) What is this POTEMKIN I see mentioned all the time?

A: POTEMKIN is a standalone program. It is NOT Freeware. POTEMKIN is a
   greatly enhanced version of the File Navigator that works within
   TERMINATOR 2 with a similar interface and with such features as:
   UU encoding and decoding.
   Reanimate deleted or lost files.
   Enhanced file viewer for GIF's, dBASE files, etc.
   Spreadsheet and Hewlett Packard type scientific calculator.
   Point-and-Shoot operations based on file extensions with associated
      and/or linked files.
   Front end menuing system for beginners/environments where password
      protection of applications and (networked) drives is useful.

   Price is 29 pounds sterling (°25 to registered Telix or Terminate
   users)

Q) TERMINATOR 2 doesn't seem to support my modem...

A: What many people REALLY mean, is that they could not find their own
   particular modem in TERMINATOR 2s' installation pick list of more
   than 500 different modems.

   This does NOT mean that you can't use TERMINATOR 2 - just that you
   should pick a Generic Hayes Compatible Modem from the list. Then the
   normal default settings should work just fine.
   (But, if you still can't get things to work, you'll have to find the
   correct initialisation strings, etc. Remember it doesn't really
   matter which program you take the settings from - they will be the
   same with most comms terminals.)
   When you HAVE found the correct settings, please e-mail them to

   so other people then have it easier with future versions...

Q) AVATAR/ANSI doesn't seem to work - all the screens are unreadable,
   or my modem locks up, what's to be done?

A: Disable XON-Xoff software flow control.
   Do this from the Options menu [ALT][O], [C]ommunication setup,
   choose your device and toggle [X]on/Xoff flow control (software) to
   {OFF}
   Make sure you turn off Software flow control (Xon/Xoff) in your
   modem's settings as well. You also have to turn {ON} [H]ardware Flow
   Control (CTS/RTS).
   If you STILL have problems, use only ANSI for that particular host
   and not AVATAR.

Q) Can I use TERMINATOR 2 in Windows 3.1n or Windows95?

A: Yes.

   Although TERMINATOR 2 is, and will remain a DOS program and works
   best under DOS, you can also use Windows if you must. I include
   T2.PIF and T2.ICO

   (Intershop Ltd have now begun the roll out of the replacement for
   Telix and Terminate in DOS, Warp and Windows95 flavours.
   These programs are not free (although more than 4000 registered
   users of the obsolete Telix and Terminate programs took advantage
   of the free upgrade procedure from Intershop Ltd that terminated
   on 26 September 1995) and more information is included in the
   customised versions of TERMINATOR 2 sponsored by Intershop Ltd).

   Many people find that TERMINATOR 2 works reasonably well under
   Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

   (Windows 3.10 and Windows 3.11 are the same for comms: very poor)

   If you can't afford the Windows95 specific replacement for Telix and
   Terminate from Intershop Ltd, then try these tips to avoid the
   "Exception 0CAH at address FA3A:D449" or stack overflow messages
   with Windows95:

   1) Delete file T2.FMN in TERMINATOR 2's home directory
   2) Set toggle `Navigator w/o tree' to {ON}
   3) See what happens when you invoke File Navigator with [Alt][F]

   Explanation: Windows95 supports long file and path names. Since
   TERMINATOR 2 is a DOS program, it doesn't support path names longer
   than 79 symbols.

Q) Can I use TERMINATOR 2 in OS/2 Warp?

A: Yes.

   TERMINATOR 2 is OS/2 aware, and gives up time slices just like a
   native OS/2 comm application.  It still uses slightly more resources
   because it's a DOS program and doesn't use the OS/2 comm. driver
   directly, but typically you get from 2% to 30% resource usage with
   TERMINATOR 2 (This 2% to 30% depends on what TERMINATOR 2 is doing
   at the time... when it can give up a slice, it does. If stuff is
   being thrown at it right, left and centre from the modem, sometimes
   it can't). Most of TERMINATOR 2's users are running OS/2 actually -
   and all seem quite happy with the performance....

   TERMINATOR 2's installation will automatically detect WARP if OS/2
   has the following line in it's AUTOEXEC.BAT:
   SET OS2COMSPEC=[Path to OS/2 command processor eg: c:\os2\cmd.exe]
   and ask if you wish it to construct the appropriate folders and
   icons.
   We recommend using Gwinn's SIO rather than the basic IBM comm
   drivers.
   The proper settings can make a BIG difference.

   Also note that TERMINATOR 2 has FOSSIL support. And Ray Gwinn's
   driver lets BBS and comms. programs that have FOSSIL support bypass
   the OS/2 virtual comm. driver... So with this route you should have
   pretty well the same performance as a native OS/2 application)

Q) Why can't I use ZedZap?

A: Probably because you haven't set your Transmit buffer size to greater
   than 16,440:
   [Alt][O], [C]ommunication setup, Select device to change and then
   [T]ransmit buffer size.
   If you still have problems, use a Fossil driver

Q) What's this "Project CAIN" ?

A: "Project CAIN" was originally the code name for the OS/2 version of
   Terminate that a group of 2nd World programmers were asked to make
   by George Collins acting on Bo Bendtsens' instructions while George
   was still the (unpaid) publicist (wrongly called "Publisher" by BB)
   of Bo Bendtsen.
   When Bo Bendtsen welched on his obligations to Terminate users,
   Intershop Ltd and this particular programming team, the "Project
   CAIN" programming team turned their talents to making a DOS program
   as well. Most of the code in TERMINATOR 2 was written by them...

   "Project CAIN" has now become the code name for a whole family of
   Terminal programs in DOS, Warp and Windows 95 versions that started
   their rollout (under a completely different name to either Terminate
   or CAIN) on 5th September 1995

   Since the new programs are intended to obsolete both Terminate and
   Telix, REGISTERED users of either Terminate or Telix had until 26th
   September 1995 to collect FREE keyfiles for the new program.
   The first 5000 people to upgrade to the re-named "Project CAIN"
   (whether by payment or with the Free scheme) received keyfiles valid
   for future versions on all platforms.

Q) What's the story behind the fraudulent 1.50, 1.51 and 3.nn versions
   of Terminate?

A: The original author of the early versions of Terminate, a teenage
   hacker from Albertslund in Denmark called Bo Bendtsen, decided that
   he didn't want to pay any taxes in Denmark and also wanted a more
   professional publishing team.

   So he agreed to sell the rights to Terminate to a Scots software
   publishing firm called Intershop Ltd for °4,000 at 16:17hrs on 16
   April 1994. (The deal also specified that Bo Bendtsen would get a
   percentage of the gross [NOT nett] revenue from Terminate in return
   for continuing to develop and maintain the earlier code.)
   Presumably he thought better of his handshake on the done deal
   because, suddenly on 19 May 1994 and without any explanation, he
   stopped answering phone calls, faxes, letters and personal visits
   from Intershop Ltd.

   On 14 July 1994, after it became clear that Bo Bendtsen intended to
   renege on his obligations and not deliver the code they had paid
   for, Intershop Ltd instructed the "Project CAIN" programming team
   (then working on the OS/2 version of Terminate) to switch work to
   producing a COMPLETELY NEW Freeware DOS version of Terminate with
   Fax Manager, RIPscrip 1.54 and a REXX-like Scripting Language so as
   to finally give the users of Terminate what they had been promised.

   This first new and completely re-coded multi task-window version of
   Terminate (1.56) was published by Intershop Ltd on 16 August 1994 -
   unfortunately with 2 of the three installation archives corrupted.

   One week later the fraudulent "Terminate 1.50" surfaced - complete
   with messages asking the gullible to send money to new addresses
   that had not appeared in the last legitimate Terminate release
   published previous to the new 1.56 version (1.41)...

   The legitimate 1.56 version (and the fraudulent 1.50 version) had
   many bugs so a wide area Beta test program was then instituted.
   Beta and Gamma testing was completed and the Final FREEWARE version
   of Terminate released on 28 August 1995. I bought all the
   intellectual property rights to Terminate on 5th September 1995 and
   further distribution of ANY version of Terminate is now expressly
   forbidden by law.

   Bo Bendtsen and his cronies are now being sued in the Supreme Court
   of Judicature in London by me for (amongst other things) defamation
   and breach of contract. Plaint numbers are 1995C/954 - 960

   If you have paid money to Bo Bendtsen or his cronies for their
   fraudulent 1.50 - 1.55 or 3.nn versions then you should make an
   official complaint to your local police so that Bo Bendtsen and his
   cronies can be brought to justice. (Don't be fooled by the SerWiz
   Comm and Strathrory Systems Ltd aliases - this is just Bo Bendtsen
   trying to pull the wool over people's eyes.)

   For the avoidance of doubt: there is not one single line of code in
   TERMINATOR 2 written by Bo Bendtsen.

Q) Why do I get `long packet' errors when trying to use ZedZap?

A: 'Cos youve not set your receive and transmit buffers to at least
   16500 (Personally I just can't see the big advantage to ZedZap...)
